SQL Server Standard
Covers the core relational database engine, basic reporting, and analysis features. It's built for small to mid-sized applications and comes with lower per-core licensing costs than Enterprise.
SQL Server Enterprise
Adds advanced scalability, high-availability features (like Always On Availability Groups across more replicas), and advanced security and performance tooling built for large, mission-critical workloads.
Licensing models
SQL Server can be licensed per physical core on the server, or under a Server + CAL model where you license the server itself plus a Client Access License for each connecting user or device. Per-core licensing usually suits internet-facing or high-user-count applications better.
Which edition do I need?
Most small and mid-sized applications run comfortably on Standard. Reach for Enterprise only when you specifically need its high-availability or advanced analytics features.
